Wedding photography at Balgonie Castle & Balbirnie House Hotel – Gillian & Simon

Hottest day of the year. Ceremony in a windowless chamber with only candles for light. Stampeding cows. These are just some of the challenges that face a wedding photographer in the modern world. Cows? Yes, cows – this is the sight that greeted Gillian and her father when they arrived at Balgonie Castle for her wedding to Simon:

After a bit of cow-shooing from myself, the bus driver and Stuart of Balgonie, they made it through the gate:

The darkness of the wedding chapel at Balgonie Castle was a welcome contrast from the blazing sunshine outside. Thankfully modern professional cameras are amazing – it was way darker than this to the naked eye:

After drinks & nibbles in the grounds of Balgonie Castle it was a short drive through Markinch to the equally magnificent Balbirnie House Hotel where Phyllis and her excellent team would look after Gillian & Simon in style for the rest of the day.

Wedding Photography at Balgonie Castle – Denise & Gavin’s wedding

Balgonie Castle in the heart of Fife was the stunning venue for Denise & Gavin’s wedding. The 14th century building, painstakingly restored by the present Laird and his son is a remarkable place but unfortunately the weather didn’t allow the wedding party to spend any time outside. Nonetheless the Laird hosted Denise & Gavin’s wedding in great style, with mulled wine for the guests in the castle after the marriage.

After the wedding Denise & Gavin travelled in style – Henry the vintage bus, provided by High Society Cars of Carnoustie – to the Garvock House Hotel in Dunfermline.

I also have to mention the wonderful Lauren of The Glass Slipper (where Denise’s stunning dress came from) who came along to help Denise get dressed and make sure everything was in place – she was a great help and made everything go smoothly so Denise was ready in plenty of time.

One more thing – it doesn’t show in the pictures of the ceremony (modern cameras are amazing!) but it was dark. Really dark. No light at all and no windows, just a couple of dozen candles. So dark in fact that when I was trying to photograph one of Denise & Gavin’s dogs (who came to the ceremony) – imagine a black dog in a dark room standing in front of a man wearing black kilt socks – all I could see was its tongue! Yep, it was dark alright. Makes for a great atmosphere though

Wedding Photography at Garvock House Hotel – Denise & Gavin’s wedding part 2

Denise & Gavin arrived at Garvock House to be greeted with a glass of champagne by Pamela and her team along with piper Steven Dewar of Scotia Pipers. Lots of photos – some formal, some not so formal (!) were taken, including the one below of Denise’s workmates – they’re all mad, how any legal stuff ever gets done is a mystery to me! After the meal the speeches (including a strong contender for “Best Man’s Speech of the Year” award) entertained everyone almost as much as Denise’s attempts to sit down (as seen shortly on ‘You’ve been framed’). The evening’s entertainment was provided by the excellent Made to Measure who played a mix of hits & ceilidh tunes. Gavin plays in a band himself, unfortunately I had to leave before he joined them on stage but I’m sure it went down a storm.

I was exhausted by the time I got home having been on the go for over twelve hours, but it was one of those weddings where the party atmosphere just keeps going and it was looking like being a good night.
